Am I the Keeper of My Sister?
Three Poems

R. Corneli Agnes Rosabella, M.A., M.Phil.

Suffering of Women

This world is entangled in desolation, despair and darkness. Many women are under bondage of some sort. The personal agonies, frustration and oppression have become the fabric of their lives. However sore the social problems are, more vicious is the spiritual captivity. The outcries of souls lost in the chasm of sin and death do storm the throne of Almighty pointing an accusing finger at us. Are we justified or guilty?

The Sin of Omissions

The Great commission of our Lord is that we show the path of salvation to everyone, but the bitter truth is that most of us have failed. Ironically,

This little guiding light of mine
Is safe under the bushel of mine.

Deep down in the heart this truth pricks and the sin of omission hurts. Yet, vain excuses and self-justifying statements lift their ugly heads in the form of I'm a woman, a weak vessel and so forth.

Many Excuses

The greatest misnomer, which prevails, is that women have their familial responsibilities and their sphere of action is demarcated within their homes. Of course, women were traditionally fettered and any daring step was bound to trigger back, but the present cultural milieu promises at least partial freedom to act and speak.

We Have More Freedom Now

The reality is that, unlike the past centuries, women are not bound by old restraints. They have the boldness and innate power to do great things. Schindler says, "Woman is biologically, socially and psychologically fitted to the creation of human values that the race needs more sorely" (18). This implies that the world waits for the women folk to spring into action and instill human values and save many from the embers of damnation.

Godly Women

The Holy Bible records the life and mission of many godly women who have responded to their call and have gained unprecedented success. Like the stars, which guide the nocturnal traveler, these women of the Holy Scriptures have illumined the paths of many and have left an indelible mark. One of the women judges, Deborah the ingenious, rose like a mother to save her perishing Israelites. Esther, the orphaned girl saved her race in a heathen nation. Rahab, a harlot sagaciously saved her kindred. What a promising missionary we see in the zeal of the woman of Sychar who led her people to the Life Giving Water-even the Messiah. Alas, all these were women of passion like us, yet they had a burning desire to save their folks.
