SOME NEW BOOKS - BRIEF NOTICES

WRITTEN ON THE HEART
The Case for Natural Law
by J. Budziszewski

Written on the Heart

Written on the Heart expounds the work of the leading architects of theory on Natural Law, including Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and John Locke. It also takes up contemporary philosophy, theology and political science, colorfully running against the intimadating tide of advanced pluralism that finds natural law so difficult to tolerate.

Professor J. Budziszewski writes,

As a Christian I regard the natural-law tradition as the nearest approach to the truth about the "law written on the heart" which ethical and political philosophy have yet, by the grace of God, achieved. True, the law written on the heart is utterly inferior to the revealed truth of the gospel, for though it tells us what sin is, it tells us nothing of how to escape. Yet it too is a real gift of God, for we have to know the bad news before we can grasp the Good News.

WHAT WE CAN'T NOT KNOW - A Guide
by J. Budziszewski

What We Can't Not Know

We are passing through an eerie phase of history in which the things that everyone really knows are treated as unheard of, a time in which the elements of common decency are themselves attacked as indecent. . . . (The author) sets out to explore the lost world of common moral truths -- what we all really know about right and wrong.

Professor J. Budziszewski writes,

. . . not only was moral knowledge universal, but the determination to play tricks on moral knowledge was universal, too. A law was written on the heart of man, but it was everywhere entangled with the evasions and subterfuges of men. Even so that law endured; and even so it was seen to endure.

SHARING YOUR FAITH WITH A HINDU
by Madasamy Thirumalai

Sharing Your Faith With a Hindu

How do you share your faith with your Hindu neighbor, colleage, and friend? The Hindu population of North America is growing steadily, now numbering over one million people. However, most Christians know little about Hindu beliefs and practices. (This book) explains historical and contemporary Hindu customs, ritual practices, and intellectual obstacles to Christianity, and offers practical tips and tools on how to win Hindus to the Lord.

Thirumalai writes,

You should recognize that in a dialogue both parties ahve equal rights to ask questions and to answer or not as he or she sees fit. There are bound to be some awkward moments when two cultures meet. Your Hindu friend may expect openness from you, and if he does, use it as an opportunity to show friendliness and gentleness. Acts of kindness can be expressed in many ways ... Of course, no amount of human effort will ever make our love constantly genuine. Only God can make our love have this quality. Remember Paul's words about love: It covers a multitude of sins. And it always hopes, always preserves. ... When the occasion arises, do not hesitate to state what you believe and why. Your Hindu friend who comes from a folk religious background will have questions about the Christian faith. We never know where the conversation will go or how the Holy Spirit will move. Submit yourself to His working. Do not plan always to finish what you started in your conversation; plan rather to be sensitive to the voice of the Spirit and to your friend's feelings.
